Oh the irony!

Microsoft is at it again, with their mostly inaccurate "laptop hunter" ads. This time, they've got a lady who wants a computer for video editing. While a MacBook Pro would be the obvious choice, she goes with another HP (what a surprise). For her money, she got (just like the last guy) old and slow RAM, a low resolution display, and piss poor bundled software. Of course, these ads push price, not quality or features.

So where's the irony? Well, the ad agency making these ads for Microsoft is Crispin Porter & Bogusky, who are, like most ad agencies, heavily invested in macs. Take a look at Bogusky's desk:

No wonder they have such a difficult time coming up with reasonable commercials for Microsoft! At least they know what you really ought to buy if you want to any kind of creative work, even if they're taking Microsoft's money to try and prove otherwise.

Hmmmm. This photo was taken in Miami around 2005, several years before CP+B won the Microsoft business. Nowadays, Bogusky's emails are tagged with: Sent from luxurious Windows Vista Ultimate.

Maybe as a joke. I highly doubt they'd change the hardware and software which much of their business is based upon (not to mention the businesses of most people in their field), because of a contract that they won. There's nothing luxurious about Vista, and I"m pretty sure they know it. Heck, even Microsoft knows it!

Which bundled program on the Mac would you use for video editing, iMovie? That's some bundled software!

Let's be completely honest: The only tangible difference between a low-end Mac and a PC is design (marginal difference), the OS and the cost. I'm happy (even a little proud) to pay more for a Mac, but most people aren't.

Another thing: I've never understood the argument for ad people being hypocrites for not exclusively using the products they pitch. If the campaign were aimed at an ad agency audience, then maybe you have a point.

If I worked on the Burger King account, I would learn to love BK (otherwise I wouldn't work on the account), but I wouldn't chain myself to it.

Are you kidding me? How about the entire iLife suite? You may not think it means much, but most everyone else who reviews computer thinks it's pretty incredible software...particularly for something that's included free with every mac! Even if it was just iMovie, it beats the heck out of Microsoft Movie Maker! And, for someone at the level that the woman in the commercial is likely at, iMovie would be more than sufficient. Not to mention the fact that she may want to move onto Final Cut Studio or Express one day, which are only available for mac!

You act like the OS is a minor difference. The OS is what makes most of the user experience on a computer, so a different OS can make an enormous difference! The difference between a low end Mac and low end PC is that even a low end mac is a pretty high end PC, with a better OS, better bundled software, MUCH better design, MUCH better support, etc.

I don't mind if people disagree with me in comments, but at least think your comments through a little.
